Union Gospel Mission is raising the alarm after someone canvassing door-to-door in the Marpole area was trying to collect money on their behalf.
Keela Keeping with the mission says they are not sure how big the scam is, but have received two phone calls about it so far.
In one case, a concerned citizen told a staff member someone was trying to fundraise door-to-door. In another, someone suspected suspicious activity and let the mission know.
“This is something we have heard of happening to other charities. Sometimes it can be pretty complex and damaging. I don’t know if this is the case. It might just be an individual going around. It almost sounds more like that. But I don’t think it happened to us before,” says Keeping.
She says they never do any fundraising door-to-door and the only legitimate ways to donate to UGM are online, by phone or onsite.
Anyone who receives a door-to-door request for funds on behalf of UGM is encouraged to call the police immediately.
Vancouver police say they are not currently investigating the scam, but are cautioning residents about giving their money or personal information to individuals canvassing door-to-door.
