A fire was seen coming from a commercial industrial complex in southeast Calgary on Thursday night, the Calgary Fire Department said.
A fire at IKO Industries, located in the 1600 block of 42nd Avenue Southeast in the Alyth/Bonnybrook Industrial Park, was reported to Calgary fire around 10:15 p.m.
CFD officials said that workers were present when the fire started but everyone got out of the building safely and there were no reported injuries.
Hazmat crews were monitoring the area.
Calgary Fire said that this was a two-alarm fire and that there were about 45 firefighters at the scene.
The blaze was considered under control as of about 1 a.m. Friday.
Derek Fee of IKO corporate communications told Global News that it appears the fire started in a storage tank containing oxidized asphalt used in the production of roofing shingles
“The area of the plant that was involved in the incident has been secured by the local authority, so we don’t have access to go and take a closer look at it, at this stage,” said Fee. “And it’ll probably be some time before we have a chance to take a look at everything and make a better determination on what the principal cause was.”
The plant wasn’t operating Friday and Fee says it will likely be awhile before operations resume.
“It’ll take some time to go through that process and get the plant back up and onward.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
