Surrey creates new task force to tackle spate of murders

Surrey has had 23 homicides this year, which is a record number that has police, business owners and residents alike, worried about crime.

A special task force created to analyze the alarming number of murders in Surrey this year met for the first time today behind closed doors.

The team, which includes Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, RCMP top officers and members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, met to focus on identifying why the jump in homicide numbers, what can be done about it and how the city can do better to prevent it in the future.

Crime analysts said the murders in Surrey seem to spike every four years.

The city had its 23 homicide of the year on November 23 when a man was found dead inside an unlicensed after-hour bar.
