Darrel Janz, who has worked as the 6 p.m. news anchor for CTV Calgary for nearly four decades, has announced he’s stepping down from the nightly news desk.

Janz said he’ll return to reporting as foreign correspondent Tara Nelson takes over the newscast.

"Her passion for travel has taken her around the world covering big events including the conflict in Kandahar, the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s fall, the New York City terrorist attacks and the 2010 World Cup," said Janz, noting Nelson will fill the chair left vacant by Barb Higgins in her run for the mayor’s chair.

Nelson will be the sole anchor at 6 p.m. starting in mid-November.

As a result, Janz will take on a new role.

"I will be going back to what is my first love and that’s where the people are, where the action is," he said during today’s newscast, which he anchored for 37 years. "Getting out there and doing stories on Albertans and their success stories and the things that inspire us is what I am looking forward to."

Janz will also continue to anchor the weekend news.

"I am definitely not retiring," he said. "That word is not in my vocabulary."
