UBC President says cuts to sports teams coming

The President of UBC says a review of the university’s athletic programs shows the school cannot continue to support all 29 of their varsity programs.

“UBC cannot continue to support the high standard of excellence for its 29 teams,” says President Stephen Toope.

Toope announced what the university is calling “a new competitive sport model” in September and held a media conference today to announce the review’s next steps and “address misunderstandings about the process.”

The university also announced today there will be two new alumni positions on the University Sport Review Advisory Team.

Toope says UBC will match funding generated at the annual Millennium Breakfast up to $300,000 per year for student athlete scholarships

The university says a final decision will be made in Spring of 2014, and changes will start to be implemented in 2015.
