REGINA – It was a celebration like no other. The Saskatchewan Roughrider’s first ever Grey Cup victory on home turf is sure to be etched into the minds of fans for years to come.
“An unbelievable finish to what was an unbelievable week is the only way I can describe it,” said Grey Cup Festival Executive Director Neil Donnelly.
Despite the amount of alcohol associated with the event, Regina Police say the whole week was a safe affair.
“We are very, very pleased to say that there were very few incidents that were Grey Cup-related,” said Regina Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich.
Police received 46 Grey Cup-related calls for service during the week, and only 26 calls resulted in police reports. Popowich says that’s thanks in part to using the right attitude.
“Even in cases where someone might have had open liquor, it was a case where you would approach and say, ‘You know, I’m going to have to take that from you, but — high five — go off and have a good time, celebrate, and be safe,’” she said.
Rider Pride indulgence was good news for Bushwakker Brewpub’s bar manager Grant Frew.
“Business was incredible. We planned on having a huge amount of people here, and it exceeded our expectations,” he said.
The night was a bit too much for one Roughrider dad, however.
Also on his way home was Ontarian Bob Nuttall, a Hamilton Tiger-Cats fan who looked on the bright side of the game’s result: “We had a great time. You know, lots of friendly rivalry, a little chirping back and forth, but that’s all good.”
