BLOG: Morning News Rewind – Feb. 26

Joelle chatted with Ernie Kurz, who is performing Saturday for the Saskatoon Blues Festival. Morning News Saskatoon

Here’s what was on the Morning News for Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Kevin reminisces about his mentorship in the news industry

As a broadcaster, I take pride in mentorships. I keep a couple of broadcasters under my wing on a regular basis, because I remember what it was like to be there.

I had a couple mentors of my own, including the producer for 104.5 CHUM FM’s morning show, Tom Jokic, and I paid the mighty Alan Cross several visits, as well.

I remember being dazzled by the levels that Tom and Alan were at; their tier of professionalism seemed unobtainable to 19-year-old me. I left their respective offices feeling inspired, bullish and ready to take on the world.

Entrepreneurialism regularly bears the element of risk. You put yourself on a razor’s edge and then leap from it, often into uncertainty. I admire entrepreneurs for this. The Raj Manek program does for fledgling business owners what Tom Jokic and Alan Cross did for me. It pulls back the blinders and opens individuals up to the amazing possibilities.

It’s a great thing PotashCorp and other major corporations recognize the value small business owners bring to Saskatchewan, but I find it unsurprising experienced entrepreneurs want to pass their knowledge along.

In the end, the pride from watching others succeed outweighs the time commitment put forward. That’s the power of ideas.

Joel travels up north on a Grey Cup tour

Saskatchewan is a huge province and having lived here for the majority of my life, it was great to visit the far north, where I had never gone before.

Saskatchewan Roughriders Neal Hughes and Brendon LaBatte took their prized trophy to five different northern communities and were greeted by smiles and excitement wherever they went.

It was very interesting to see how the Riders connect the northern and southern parts of the province, even though their respective inhabitants don’t always get a chance to meet each other.

It wasn’t all about football though, as both Brendon and Neal spoke to students about the importance of working hard in whatever field you choose. They make for good role models too; both players grew up here in Saskatchewan.

It was a very rewarding tour to cover and it’s a trip that I won’t soon forget.

Melissa does yoga for a great cause

Being able to start the day at the Yoga for Social Good fundraiser today was great!

It’s always wonderful to see people working out so early in the morning and in this case, doing it for a good cause.

The money raised from the social initiative helps the YWCA provide services to women and their families. If you would like to help out their cause, more events will be held throughout the year.

If you would like to try a yoga class for social good, there will be one more class taking place on Friday at 7 a.m.

Joelle discusses the Blues with musician Ernie Kurtz

This has been a week of blues and I’m not talking about the weather!

It’s been such a treat to get artist after artist in studio for live performances.

Ernie Kurtz was a pleasure to talk to and his raspy voice, upbeat guitar and harmonica accompaniment had me dancing at the anchor desk.

He’s a full-time cook, but music is his number one passion.

Ernie lives about an hour away from Saskatoon, so he loves coming in to town to play for the Saskatoon Blues Festival.

His band is the opening act at O’Brians Event Centre on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.; the Twisters and Carolyn Wonderland are to follow.
