Pine beetle threat kept at bay in Saskatchewan

SASKATOON – An entomologist with the environment ministry says the northern part of Saskatchewan is still clear of the mountain pine beetle, and he says fewer trees had to be removed this year in the south.

Rory McIntosh says they’ve recently completed surveys of the Cypress Hills area and the northern boreal forest.

In Cypress Hills, McIntosh says only 10 or 12 trees were removed this year.

He says the province’s management system on the ground and their rapid response approach seems to be keeping things in check.
