Big changes are coming to Vancouver’s West End.

Vancouver city council approved a new plan Wednesday that will add up to 10,000 new residents to the downtown neighbourhood.

In the last 30 years, the population has grown 21 per cent, mostly in condos. The new neighbourhood plan proposes a 20 per cent population increase over 30 years, with a significant portion of that coming through social and rental housing.

54 per cent of residents are under 40 years old, and the neighbourhood has the fourth highest density of children  in Vancouver. 75 per cent of residents live in studio or one bedroom apartments.

Taller buildings are proposed for major corridors such as Burrard, Robson and Davie, and infill housing will be permitted in laneways and alleys. The City is also proposing to create new public gathering spaces and enhance several intersections.
