Gear Grinding

You know what really grinds my gears? When people say things like: “We should have won;” or “They GAVE away the game.” In 10 years of pro football and another 10 of amateur ball I have never, ever won a game we shouldn’t have won or lost a game we shouldn’t have lost. There were games we COULD have won or lost but to say we Should have won implies that at the time the individuals on the team were not doing their best to win. Sure, guys get beat on any given play that may directly effect the outcome of the game but I guarantee you that the guy that got beat was doing his best at the time… its not always x’s and o’s; the other guy gets paid too!

The bottom line is that a Canadian football contest is 60 minutes long. Each individual does his best to contribute to the team’s mission for 60 minutes and team that has more points in the end wins. I would love it if they got rid of the points and just let us beat each other for an hour and the last man standing wins, but those aren’t the rules- the team with the most points wins. On top of this rule about the points, I have never met a player, at any level, that was good enough not to try their hardest. If you don’t try in this game you will be serverly injured.  That’s why I am confused about how the press portrayed our win against the Argos.

More than one media outlet said the Argo’s gave us the win. I guess they’re referring to the fumble on the fake punt on 3rd and 9. 3rd and 9, not 3rd and 4, if the guy had caught the snap it would have been unlikely he would have gotten the NINE yards. OR They may be referring to the call to fake the punt in the first place. We had been getting good returns all night, so say we start on our own 30. The play calling would have been the same, only we may have done it faster. I’m not saying that we could but the media are acting like we weren’t scoring at will in the 4th quarter….anyways, maybe that’s why I don’t read the papers, it just doesn’t make sense sometimes.

We have known for a week or so that we would be playing BC in the west semi, and now we know it will be in Regina! We get to sleep in our own beds, eat our usual meals, use our own locker room, not get pelted with beer cans and we will play in the cold. I can’t believe that I am hoping for some chilly weather this week but I think it would be a huge home field advantage. In Vancouver they are still wearing shorts and walking on the beach and stuff like that. Despite the recent good weather, November in Saskatchewan is like….November in Saskatchewan and getting and staying warm during a game is not easy especially when you were wearing shorts and walking on the beach the day before. We will see what Saturday will bring, but I hope its cold, not Saskatchewan in November cold, but maybe Saskatchewan in early October cold.

As for the pink gloves that I am auctioning off: the first batch auction is closed. The competition in the locker room amongst the guys to see who’s would go for the most got pretty heated and I am happy to report that Kitwana Jones 2 TDs in 2games helped his gloves edge out rookie of the year Weston Dressler ($176 – $162). Then it was Chris Szarka $100, Omar Morgan $94, Scott Schultz and Gene Makowsky $86, Tad Kornegay $76, and Scott Gordon $66.  The hard part now is going to be getting the guys to give up the gloves. We are undefeated when we wear them so if you are one of the winners please be patient if you don’t get them right away. You can bid on the next batch, including former Mustang Andy Fantuz’s, on abou67.com/auction.

And speaking of THEE University of Western Ontario Mustangs, they were victorious in their first playoff game against number 8 ranked Laurier and will meet U of Ottawa Gee Gee’s in the 101st Yates Cup in London on Saturday just before we take to the field against the Lion’s……if you don’t know, now you know.
