Police were alerted to the incident by a 911 call reporting gunshots had been heard just outside a business located on St-Régis Boulevard near Deacon Avenue in the busy commercial district.

Montreal police spokesperson Jeanne Drouin said it happened just before 1 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been shot in the upper body. The 53-year-old was declared dead at the scene.

While police did not release the victim’s identity, Drouin said he was known to them.

Meanwhile, a source confirmed to The Canadian Press that the victim was well-known Montreal Mafia figure Francesco Del Balso.

Police suspect Del Balso was behind the attempted murder in mid-March of Leonardo Rizzuto, the son of late Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto.

Officers stopped Del Balso several days later at the Montreal airport as he attempted to leave the country and seized his passport before releasing him.

A perimeter was set up to protect the scene and allow for the investigation which is being led by the SPVM’s major crimes unit.

No arrests have been made.

Drouin said the fatal shooting is the Montreal’s 12th homicide of 2023.
