Quebec City inches closer to Nordiques rebirth

MONTREAL – Quebec City might be getting a new arena and maybe its old hockey team back, too.

According to media reports, a meeting between Premier Jean Charest and Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume is scheduled for Tuesday in the capital to discuss the city’s new amphitheatre project, estimated to cost $400 million.

Labeaume said the new amphitheatre would require provincial and federal funding. The provincial government is set to announce its financial commitment.

Earlier this week, Charest said he supports the construction of the new arena so Quebec could once again host the Nordiques hockey team, as well as bid for the Olympic Games.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has said in the past that unless the arena is a go-ahead, there is no chance of bringing a hockey franchise back to Quebec City.

The Quebec Nordiques were relocated to Colorado in 1995 and renamed the Avalanche.
