Most new Montreal transit workers will have to submit to drug tests starting this fall, the Société de transport de Montréal says.
The STM last month put out a call for tenders seeking a specialized laboratory that can check applicants for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines and phencyclidine (PCP).
The transit authority said the testing will be done on applicants for employment in "at risk" jobs such as bus and métro drivers, vehicle maintenance workers and those who work in métro tunnels near high-voltage electrical installations.
The STM says it has about 500 different types of jobs, most of which are considered at-risk.
The authority expects to conduct pre-employment drug tests on between 800 and 1,200 people annually.
For current employees, the STM says it has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs on the job among employees in risky jobs.
