Residents flee toxic fire near Quebec City

QUEBEC – More than 20 homes were evacuated Wednesday in the Quebec City suburb of Charny when a fire at a fertilizer plant sent toxic smoke into the neighbourhood.

The fire erupted about 2:30 a.m. at SynAgri, a plant in the community on the south shore of Quebec City.

Fire officials made about 50 residents in the immediate vicinity leave their homes for a safe building elsewhere, Levis fire department chief Yves Depres said.

Residents still in the surrounding area are being asked to stay inside their dwellings and to keep their windows closed and air conditioners and air vents closed until further notice from public health officials, Depres added.

Classes at a local school were cancelled for the day on Wednesday.

Depres said there was "significant smoke" still billowing from the burned buildings as of 8:30 a.m. and fhe did not know what the cause of the fire might have been.
