The North Vancouver RCMP say the 26-year-old man who was arrested in connection with an unprovoked stabbing on a popular trail near the Grouse Grind Tuesday has now been released from custody.

Cpl. Richard De Jong told Global News investigators are renewing their efforts to look for the suspect responsible for the stabbing after the 26-year-old man was cleared.

Police say as a result of an in-depth investigation, charges were stayed after more information was received.

The 59-year-old victim was stabbed while hiking the B.C. Mountaineering Club trail in North Vancouver on November 5.

The victim was hiking up the trail when at the half-way mark he was approached by the suspect coming down the trail.

The victim, who did not know the suspect, was stabbed in the abdomen and was left to struggle down the mountain, where he was helped by other hikers.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

De Jong says the incident is very unusual.

“Where a lone hiker on the North Shore is stabbed in a totally unprovoked manner. This is totally unprecedented.”

De Jong says they are reminding hikers to go out in groups and be aware of their surroundings.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the North Vancouver RCMP.
