Edmonton – Crews say they have a good handle on Edmonton roads despite recent freezing rain that has fallen on the city.
Crews worked Wednesday night and Thursday morning applying sand, salt and de-icers to roads.
“Last night (Wednesday night) of course didn’t turn out to be as bad as it could have been. We didn’t seem to have much difficulty with the roads, with icing from the freezing rain,” says Bob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance.
The city is urging drivers to exercise extreme caution and give themselves extra time to get to their destination.

Crews are now moving their focus from roads to sidewalks.
“It’s one of those things where we’ve been out and sanded them already. With the rain last night, we started sanding again last night all of the sidewalks and we’ll continue to do that,” explains Dunford.
Dunford adds the city is filling up community league sandboxes which residents can use to sand the sidewalks they are responsible for maintaining.
Edmontonians can go to the City of Edmonton website to find the locations of the community league sandboxes.
Dunford says the city sand is chemical free.
“What we do is dry it in a natural plant so it has no moisture in it and that allows it to stick down. We do not put any chemical in that sand. So, if people are concerned about their lawn, there’s no chemical in that sand at all.”
Edmonton is expected to be hit by about one centimeter of snow Friday, and temperatures are expected to drop to lows of around minus 12 degrees Celsius by the weekend.
