4,000 tonne concrete box pushed under roadway for Evergreen Line construction

Construction on the Evergreen Line continues. Over the November long weekend, crews pushed an enormous concrete box under the Barnet Highway and reopened the road to traffic eight hours ahead of schedule over the long weekend. The largest traffic disruption on the Evergreen Line project has now been removed.

The Barnet Highway at Ioco Road in Port Moody was closed over the long weekend as construction crews pushed a 4,000 ton concrete box under the roadway.

The box is the largest of its kind in North America and weighs about 4,000 tonnes.

It will contain part of the future Inlet Centre Station platform and guideway.

By doing the work over the Remembrance Day weekend, officials say they saved 60 nights worth of traffic closures.

Crews finished the work eight hours ahead of schedule and the highway is now open again.

Next weekend’s planned closure is also now cancelled.

The Evergreen Line is expected to be completed by summer 2016. It’s expected to carry 70,000 passengers and remove 40,000 cars off the road per day by 2021.
