Alberta election 2023 results: Edmonton-South

Global News is projecting Rhiannon Hoyle will win the riding of Edmonton-South for the New Democratic Party, which was previously held by independent Thomas Dang — who did not run again.

Edmonton-South is a provincial riding located in the city of Edmonton. This riding is currently represented by Independent MLA Thomas Dang, who first took office as a member of the New Democratic Party in 2015.

Dang collected 10,673 votes, winning 46.63 per cent of the vote in the 2019 Alberta provincial election.

In the 2023 election, there is no incumbent for Edmonton-South as Dang has announced he is not running again.

City of Edmonton 2021 council candidate and former Alberta Party president Rhiannon Hoyle is running for the NDP. In the Edmonton municipal election, she lost the seat for Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi by just 33 votes to Jennifer Rice.

Tunde Obasan won the nomination for the UCP, but announced in early April he would not run after all due to unspecified personal reasons. The UCP appointed Joseph Angeles as the replacement.

Voters will decide who will represent Edmonton-South during the upcoming Alberta provincial election on May 29, 2023. Visit this page on election night for a complete breakdown of up-to-the-minute results.

History

This was a new riding in 2019 as a result of boundary changes, made up of areas previously part of Edmonton-South West and smaller parts of Edmonton-Whitemud, Edmonton-Ellerslie and Leduc-Beaumont.

Dang was part of the 2015 orange crush, which saw the Alberta NDP stomp out a 44-year Progressive Conservative dynasty in the province. When elected in 2015, Dang was the youngest candidate in the running, at 20 years old.

The riding encompasses deep southwest Edmonton.

It includes a few neighbourhoods north of Anthony Henday Drive, to the east of Rabbit Hill Road and south of 23 Avenue. South of the Henday the boundary stretches from 91 Street in the east to Whitemud Creek on the west, and south to Highway 19.
