The snow squalls are caused by lake effect snow, which occurs as cold winds pass over warmer water. In this case, the surface temperature of Lake Huron – including Georgian Bay – is around 10 C. But the air temperature is about -3 C. The winds pick up moisture, forming clouds and then precipitation.

Environment Canada has reported about 15 cm in Alliston as of 4 a.m. Another 10 to 15 are possible in the area.
