Vancouver runner does Grouse Grind in 23m, 48s

VANCOUVER — A Vancouver runner has set a new record for running the Grouse Grind shattering the old record that has stood for six years.

Sebastian Salas, 23, recorded a time of 23 minutes 48 seconds running up the 2.9 Grouse Mountain course shaving 32 seconds off the old record of 24:22 set by New Zealand mountain runner Jonathan Wyatt in 2004.

Salas said he realized when he reached the three quarter mark in just over 18 minutes he had a chance to set a record.

“I was just trying for another fast time. The last quarter was very fast for me. I didn’t really know how fast I could go. It’s kind of nice the record for the grind is back in Vancouver,” Salas said.

He said he has been quietly training this season to beat Wyatt’s recreational record for the Grind.
