A man was killed in a Wednesday night officer-involved shooting in Surrey, B.C.
According to the provincial police watchdog, Surrey RCMP officers responded to a call around 9:30 p.m. at a motel.
When officers were attending the call, motel staff alerted the officers of an armed robbery in progress happening nearby.
“When they responded to that, they saw two individuals,” said Ronald MacDonald, Independent Investigations Office of B.C.’s chief civilian director.
“In an attempt to stop those individuals, there was an interaction with one that led to a police officer firing shots. One individual was struck and died at the scene.”
The second suspect was arrested and taken into custody, Surrey RCMP said.
IIO BC is investigating the incident, looking closely at the facts that led up to the shots being fired by police.
Footage from the scene late Wednesday shows several RCMP cruisers focused on the area near 104 Avenue near 139 and 140 streets.
The area remained closed early Thursday morning.
Surrey RCMP will not be providing any additional information as the IIO has taken conduct of the investigation.
