Family outrage after Langley police shooting

The family of a man shot to death by a Langley Mountie last Friday night say they are outraged and confused.

Donald Sorochan, speaking on behalf of the family of 22-year-old Alvin Wright, said Wright was a hard-working, dedicated husband and loving dad to baby Alyssa.

"We wrestle with outrage and confusion as to how quickly this tragedy happened," Sorochan wrote.

An investigation is underway after the Wright was killed in a police encounter in Langley, Vancouver police said.

Const. Jana McGuinness said Langley RCMP officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 5200-block 203rd Street Friday at about 11:30 p.m., after a woman called 911.

While searching the apartment, a man confronted the police. Wright was allegedly shot by an RCMP officer and died a short time later in hospital.

The Vancouver Police Department was called in to investigate the shooting and have interviewed several witnesses.

“We’re in the very early stages of the investigation and still looking into what factors led to the shooting,” McGuinness said Saturday. “All we know can for sure is that the officer involved is a veteran, but we don’t have the exact number of years of service.”

People couldn’t say if either the male victim or the female who called in the domestic disturbance are known to police.
