Toronto’s police watchdog is investigating an incident just east of Liberty Village on Friday evening.
Toronto police notified the public of an ongoing investigation in the area of East Liberty Street and Strachan Avenue at around 9:10 p.m. on Friday.
In a tweet, the force said that police were “on scene conducting an investigation” and that roads were closed.
Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), said on Saturday that the investigation was being undertaken by the Toronto police’s gun and gang task force. Officers were reportedly executing a search warrant on the seventh floor of 65 East Liberty Street.
“Shortly after the ETF breached the unit door, two men went over the balcony,” the SIU said in a statement. “The 31-year-old man landed on the fourth floor, and the 27-year-old man landed on the ground.”
Toronto paramedics told Global News that one man was in critical condition, while the other was in serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Both are in intensive care, the SIU said.
