Toronto police said the incident occurred just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday in the Pharmacy Avenue and Dolphin Drive area.

In an update later on Wednesday evening, Duty Insp. Mike Hayles said that officers arrived at the scene to find a 22-year-old man who had sustained gunshot wounds in the “lower portion” of his body.

Before police arrived, he said residents were tending to the man and helping to treat his injuries.

Investigators believe the shooting took place on the stairs of a Pharmacy Avenue building, though no weapons were recovered from the scene. Hayles said an interaction took place between the victim and two suspects.

His injuries, police said, are serious and life-threatening. The man was taken to hospital by Toronto paramedics.

Police said they are seeking two male suspects but did not provide a more detailed description. Hayles said there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
