Early Sept. 3, 2022, a woman in her 20s was independently taken to the University of Alberta Hospital after she was shot near 82 Avenue and 109 Street.

She was shot in the chest, police said, and sustained serious injuries but was in stable condition and ultimately survived the shooting.

At a news conference Tuesday, police said the shooter joined the group for a ride then pulled out a gun and shot the woman at close-range. He then fled from the vehicle.

Police issued a search warrant and 33-year-old Khatar Mohamed Mussa was arrested in a neighbourhood in west Toronto, on Jan. 27.

The charges he faces include attempted murder while using a restricted firearm, possession of a loaded or prohibited firearm, and possession of a firearm knowing it was prohibited, police said.

“This was a random act of violence that nearly killed an innocent woman who was out enjoying a long weekend with friends,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Stewart of Edmonton Police Service’s guns and gangs unit.

“We don’t believe the victim knew Mohamed Mussa, and this horrific assault against her was completely spontaneous.”

While police were on scene conducting their investigation into the shooting of the woman, officers witnessed another shooting in which no one was injured.

Police arrested that shooter on scene and charged him with 12 firearms-related offences, including assault with a weapon, discharge firearm with intent and possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order.

The two incidents have since been determined to be unrelated, they just happened to occur near each other on the same night.
