UVic served with rabbit cull injunction

The University of Victoria was served with a temporary injunction issued yesterday by the B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver which will prohibit the trapping and killing of rabbits.

Roslyn Cassells went to court seeking time to process permits required to relocate many of the 1,400 rabbits that are overrunning the campus.

“I made the petition for the injunction because UVic said they were going to start trapping soon,” said Cassells.

The university had given the environmental groups a month to get their permits passed by the Ministry of Environment, said Cassells. The sanctuaries, which include one in Texas, are ready to take the rabbits but the permits are not ready.

The injunction, issued by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Deborah Kloegman, states that the University not trap or kill any rabbits until the petition by Cassells is heard. Cassells has until Aug. 27 to schedule a hearing.

UVic communications officer Patty Pitts confirmed Tom Smith, director of facilities management, received notice of the injunction.

“We cannot comment on the injunction until administrators meet with our lawyers Tuesday morning,” she said. “We’ll have more information then.”
