A man was taken to hospital and another man was arrested following a stabbing in southeast Calgary on Tuesday that police believe may have occurred because of road rage.
Police told Global News that officers responded to a call about a possible collision on Peigan Trail by Barlow Trail S.E. at 4:20 p.m.
They said two men were fighting in the street and an investigation determined both had been driving vehicles before the altercation.
One man was reportedly stabbed in the abdomen and taken to Foothills Medical Centre for his injuries. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was listed as being in stable condition.
Police said another man was taken into custody following the stabbing but did not say whether they expected charges to be laid against him.
Road rage incidents rising, says CPS
While police have yet to fully determine whether they believe the violence was motivated by road rage, a CPS spokesperson told Global News road rage incidents are rising in Calgary.
According to data provided to Global News, there were 114 calls for road rage incidents in January last year compared to 103 calls during the same time frame in 2021.
There was also an increase in road rage incidents between 2020 to 2021. Road rage incidents in Q4 2021 increased by 24 per cent compared to the same time in 2020.
The data suggests there is also a seasonal trend with the numbers. Data collected between July 2020 and February 2022 shows there were approximately double the incidents in the summer compared to the winter months.
A CPS spokesperson told Global News that citizens who encounter an aggressive driver should stay in their vehicles with the windows up and proceed to a safe location such as a police station or other safe, populated area.
“Report all dangerous or aggressive driving by either calling 911 if the event is still unfolding, or the non-emergency number — 403-266-1234 — after the fact, when you can do so safely,” the spokesperson said.
