Peel Regional Police said emergency crews were called to the area of Malta Avenue and Ray Lawson Boulevard, near Hurontario Street, at 1:41 p.m.

“When officers arrived, they found that it was a two-vehicle collision that had occurred and the vehicle that was struck was forced up onto a curb and struck an adult female and a small child,” Const. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene.

Patten said the woman was taken to a trauma centre where she is in critical condition, while the young boy was taken to a children’s trauma centre and is believed to be in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Both drivers — the only occupants of the vehicles — remained at the scene, Patten said.

Patten said only one of the drivers was taken to hospital for a precautionary reason, though Peel paramedics told Global News they transported a total of four people to hospital: a woman to a trauma centre in critical condition, a child around eight years old to a trauma centre with serious injuries and two others to a local hospital.

“From what I understand, the female pedestrian and the child were standing, possibly waiting to cross the road,” Patten said.

“I don’t believe the pedestrians could have necessarily done anything to avoid this happening. It’s very scary.

“But if I can give any recommendations to anyone, if you are a pedestrian and you’re waiting to cross the street or you’re standing waiting for a bus, try to stay as far away back from the road as you can, because these freak accidents can happen.”

There is no word on what may have led to the collision, but Patten said everything will be considered in the investigation.

There is also no word on the relationship between the woman and the young child who were struck.
