MONTREAL – Police in Laval confirmed Tuesday morning that they have launched a civil suit against Basil Parasiris, the man who shot and killed a police officer during an pre-dawn raid in March 2007.

“I can’t give you any further details, because it’s now before the courts,” said police spokesman Constable Franco Di Genova.

The suit, filed in February, is reportedly worth $2 million, but Di Genova would not confirm the exact dollar amount.

Parasiris was charged with murder after he fired a revolver at Constable Daniel Tessier, who was part of a team that raided Parasiris’s home in Brossard under suspicion that he was involved with a small drug trafficking network. Parasiris was eventually acquitted, but was later sentenced to 20 months in prison for the illegal firearms seized from his home the day of the shooting. He served only five months before being paroled in July 2009.

In November 2008, Parasiris sued the city of Laval and Quebec justice officials for $1.5 million, claiming police used an abusive amount of force when they stormed his home shortly after 5 a.m. on March 2, 2007. That matter is still before the courts.
