TORONTO – TV news veteran Lisa LaFlamme will be stepping in to take over the anchor’s chair from Lloyd Robertson, CTV announced Friday.
Robertson’s final signature sign-off, "and that’s the kind of day it’s been," will come in 2011, marking 35 years of anchoring the network’s nightly national broadcast, he announced Thursday at the end of his newscast.
"There comes a time and this is it! I want to leave a suitable period for my successor to have a smooth and seamless transition," he said in a statement.
CTV said Robertson, 76, will continue to be seen on the network after 2011, and he will continue to co-host CTV’s news feature show W5.
Robertson left CBC to join CTV in 1976, and joined Harvey Kirck as CTV National News co-anchor until 1983, when he took over as head of the news program.
Robertson began his broadcasting career in 1952 at a radio station in his hometown of Stratford, Ont., before moving to a station in nearby Guelph, Ont., in 1953.
He jumped to television in 1954 to work for CBC in Winnipeg and then in Ottawa, serving as the national news anchor from 1970-76.
He was the first journalist to be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2007 and is also a Member of the Order of Canada.
Robertson lives just outside of Toronto with his wife Nancy. They have four daughters.
LaFlamme will serve as Robertson’s backup before taking over as the chief anchor late in 2011.
