METRO VANCOUVER — A baby girl is recovering in hospital after losing consciousness and nearly drowning in a Surrey swimming pool Wednesday.
Police were called to the 15000-block of Devonshire Drive around 6:15 p.m. after a baby girl, described as being less than two years old, was found floating face-down in a residential swimming pool, according to Surrey RCMP.
Before rescue crews arrived, however, a tenant and a next door neighbour, who happened to be a doctor, removed the girl from the pool and performed CPR on her.
The baby began breathing at the scene, according to witnesses.
It is believed the mother, who is from out of town, had been momentarily distracted when the baby fell into the pool.
The good Samaritans did not want to be identified.
The baby was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital, where Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Blair McColl said she appears to be recovering well.
“The last I heard, the prognosis is pretty good,” he said. “Things have definitely improved and there’s a lot of reason to have some hope.”
Police are reminding the public to carefully monitor children around swimming pools as more people head outdoors for the summer.
