Suspect arrested after student injured in shooting at Brampton, Ont. high school

A student sustained serious injuries after a shooting at a high school in Brampton, Ont., officials say.

Emergency crews were called to The Gore Road and Fitzpatrick Drive at around noon for reports of a shooting.

Police said the victim had critical injuries but was in stable condition.

Malon Edwards, a spokesperson for the Peel District School Board, confirmed the incident took place in the parking lot of Castlebrooke Secondary School.

The victim is a student at the school, Edwards said.

Police said the victim is 18 years old.

“Police were called to the scene and are investigating,” Edwards said. “The student has been taken to hospital. At this time, we do not have any other information to share.”

In an update just after 3 p.m., officers said investigators believe it was a targeted incident.

“There is no risk to public safety,” the tweet read.

Edwards said school staff and the board are “working closely” with police on the investigation.

“We are currently providing support for the students and staff at Castlebrook Secondary School,” Edwards wrote. “The safety, well-being and mental health of our students is our top priority.”

On Saturday morning, police said they had arrested a youth suspect wanted in connection with the incident. They were charged with attempted murder and failing to comply with a release order.
