A 12-year-old boy visiting Toronto for a soccer tournament died Saturday in hospital after an incident at a hotel pool on Friday.
The boy, who was staying with his soccer team at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue, was rushed to Toronto East General Hospital when he was pulled from the pool.
He was swimming with about 15 other children when some of them noticed him, and another boy, struggling to stay afloat. The 12-year-old was pulled from the bottom of the pool. A 13-year-old boy was also rescued but was unharmed. The pool was supervised by several adult chaperones but no lifeguard, police said.
The 12-year-old boy, from Brooklyn, died Saturday morning. His family travelled from the United States and were with him in the hospital.
“They were there when he passed away,” said Detective Jeff Allington.
Tragically, this was the second drowning incident in Toronto this week.
On Wednesday, emergency officials responded to a call at a Scarborough apartment building where they removed two boys who were found without vital signs.
The victims were rushed to Scarborough Grace Hospital where one of the boys was pronounced dead. The second teen died of his injuries on Friday.
