Student charged after possible hazardous concoction at the U of S

SASKATOON – A potentially hazardous concoction at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) kept emergency crews busy Wednesday afternoon.

The possible mixture of hazardous chemicals was reported at a lab in the Engineering Building.

The area around the basement lab was cleared but no evacuation was required.

Investigators undertook a precautionary sweep to check air quality and ensure the overall safety of the campus community.

Multiple tests revealed no imminent danger and normal functions were resumed.

No injuries were reported.

Officials do not believe there was any intent to disrupt exams.

Police then searched a residence in the 300-block of Cumberland Ave. North.

A small amount of chemical was removed however there was no threat to public safety.

A 25-year-old student was arrested and is facing a theft charge.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Police continue to investigate.
