Canadian crib recall expands

Five different kinds of drop-side cribs sold in Canada, which could cause injuries to babies, are being recalled, Health Canada said Thursday.

Dorel Distribution Canada, Isis Inc., Delta Enterprise Corp., Simmons Juvenile Products and Million Dollar Baby are recalling some of their models of drop-side cribs over concerns about the possible malfunctioning of the drop-side hardware.

The cribs recalled Thursday were cited in complaints received by Health Canada between 2000 and 2010, and expand on a recall of Storkcraft drop-side cribs initiated in November of last year.

Health Canada received 90 complaints within the 10-year period, which included 81 complaints that didn’t result in injuries, seven involving bumps and bruises, one involving a concussion and one death. Fifty-two of the complaints were specifically about the Storkcraft cribs.

Crib owners shouldn’t return the product, as each of the five companies has said they will issue repair kits for the cribs.

Health Canada noted, however, it had not yet received any of the repair kits, and plans to assess their safety when they become available.
