P.E.I. police exhume body washed up in bay

CHARLOTTETOWN – The RCMP and coroner’s office exhumed the body of an unidentified man in Charlottetown Monday in hopes that advances in DNA testing will help identify the remains which were found in western P.E.I.’s Malpeque Bay by a fisherman 13 years ago.

The investigation at the time failed to identify him.

"In 1997 you needed a lot of DNA," said chief coroner Dr. Charles Trainor. "In 2010, you only need a small amount of DNA in order to proceed for identification purposes and you have these people who are specially trained in putting faces on skulls and having a person identified through this means."

Police reported no indications of foul play and said the man probably drowned.

They believe he may have been in the water for up to two months and may have drifted a considerable distance with the tides.
