U.S. teen dead after fall at Capilano Suspension Bridge

NORTH VANCOUVER – Capilano Suspension Bridge remained open Monday with tourists visiting the rocky canyon where a 17-year-old California teen plunged to his death a day earlier.

The teen fell more than 30 metres into the canyon from a viewing platform and was pronounced dead by the time rescuers got to him Sunday night. The accident happened at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Sue Kaffka, vice-president of sales and marketing for The Capilano Group, said the area where the accident happened remains open and safe. Kaffka said the group is deeply saddened by the news and sends their condolences to the unidentified teen.

Visitor Brock Smith, of Washington State, said he was surprised to hear of the accident. He had just walked along the Nature’s Edge trail, on the north side of the bridge where the accident occurred.

Smith observed that the fences are so high – at chest level – that one would have to have been leaning way over or on top of it to fall off.

The teen’s fellow students and witnesses are being offered grief counselling, police say, after seeing their classmate fall. The teen was part of a group celebrating their grad with a trip to B.C.

No name has yet been released.
