Translink staff take four more sick days than average Canadian worker: taxpayers group

A FOI request made by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has found Translink employees take more sick time than the average Canadian worker.

Translink employees average four more sick days per year than those in the private sector. Translink staff are averaging 11.6 sick days per year compared to 7.5 sick days per year in the private sector.

Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says it took a long time get back the information on sick days from Translink.

However, he says government sector workers take about 12 sick days a year, so Translink’s numbers are not much different than other public sector workers.

Bateman says he’s not surprised bus drivers take more sick days because they come into contact with the public regularly, but the FOI documents found Skytrain workers also take almost the same amount of sick days, even though they are not dealing with the public as often.

Translink says they take absenteeism seriously, and issued the following statement to Unfiltered with Jill Krop:

“TransLink counts on our employees to regularly be at work so we can meet our commitment to deliver outstanding service to our customers.  Sick leave is a benefit that all employees have at each of the organizations.  Absenteeism is monitored, and we take measures to address it as appropriate.”
