Chilliwack’s long-time attraction is closing its doors.
Today is the last day Minter Gardens fans can go in and enjoy the premises.
The garden opened its gates in 1980, and was visited by up to a hundred thousand people every year.
But the gardens are losing money.
“In more recent years, the attraction has felt the pressure of declining tourism and a changing climate that offers up more cold, rainy days than the abundantly sunny ones that attract visitors to the grounds,” said co-owner Brian Minter in a press release. “Together, these factors have significantly impacted the long-term viability of operating an outdoor destination garden.”

The 13-hectare property is now up for sale and 50 employees are being let go.
Marshall MacLeod from Colliers International estimates the property will sell for around $10 million, and could be redeveloped as a residential/retail project.
The Minters plan to keep operating a neighbouring garden centre.
