Calgary police have identified the victim in Monday’s shooting in the northeast community of Falconridge.
Police were called on Monday for reports of shots fired in the 0-100 block of Falsby Way N.E. Officers found a man dead upon arrival.
Shakiel Ahkeem Bennett died as a result of a gunshot wound, according to an autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Police say Bennett was travelling with an unknown passenger in a Black Nissan Rogue prior to the shooting, and they arrived together at the residence where the incident occurred.
Investigators are looking for the passenger because they may have critical information that may advance the investigation, according to a Friday afternoon news release.
On Friday night, police release a statement on behalf of Bennett’s family.
“We are absolutely devastated by the loss of our son, Shakiel Ahkeem Bennett, who was tragically taken from us just days ago,” the statement reads. “Shakiel was loved by so many, and his loss has left a void in our hearts that can never be filled. We are completely overwhelmed with grief.
“Shakiel was a caring, giving, loving and self-less person. He cared deeply about his friends and family and would do anything to help anyone. He absolutely loved to laugh with his friends and family.
“Shakiel will be greatly missed by his parents, his two brothers and four sisters, extended family and relatives, and his many friends. At this time, we want to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone for their love and support and helping us through this incredibly difficult time.
“We are kindly asking the media for privacy at this time so we can grieve the loss of our son, brother and friend.”
The family said it has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for a funeral.
The Calgary Police Service said this is a targeted incident but do not have any suspects in custody at this time.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.
“We are asking anyone with information to please come forward to the police,” Bennett’s family said in their statement. “Any piece of information, no matter how small you may think it is, can make all the difference in helping police find who is responsible for taking Shakiel’s life and holding them accountable.
“A parent should never outlive their child. We are now forced to live the rest of our lives without our son, who had his whole life ahead of him. We were robbed of the chance to celebrate life’s milestones or enjoy day-to-day life with him. We will never fully be able to heal until justice is served for Shakiel.”
