Milito’s double helps Inter Milan win championship

Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) – Diego Milito scored a goal in each half as Inter Milan was crowned champions of Europe for the first time since 1965, beating Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Milito tallied the opening goal in the 35th minute after Bayern had a penalty appeal turned down, while he added a second goal in the 70th minute on the counter-attack after a good spell of pressure from the German side.

The win completes a historic treble for Jose Mourinho’s men as they have won the Serie A, Coppa Italia and now Champions League, while Bayern will have to settle for a domestic double having already won the Bundesliga and league cup.

Maicon was fortunate not to give away a penalty kick in the 14th minute when the ball struck his arm from an Arjen Robben cross, while Wesley Sneijder had a powerful free kick parried by goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt a few minutes later.

Inter took the lead with 10 minutes to play in the first half when a long clearance by goalkeeper Julio Cesar was flicked on by Milito into the path of Sneijder.

He then played a return ball to the Argentine, who got behind the Bayern defense and chipped his shot past Butt.

Sneijder could have doubled the advantage shortly before halftime, but he fired a first-time shot right at the goalkeeper, while Bayern missed a great chance to equalize inside the opening minute of the second half.

Hamit Altintop laid a pass off to Thomas Muller and, with just Cesar to beat, his shot struck the legs of the goalie and stayed out.

Bayern continued to pressure with Altintop barely missing a shot at the near post and Muller having his volley cleared to safety by the head of Esteban Cambiasso.

Cesar needed to make another good stop on a curling shot from Robben, but Inter put the game away 20 minutes from time as Milito worked his way past Daniel van Buyten and drove the ball inside the far post.
