Saskatchewan RCMP cancel emergency alert in Langham after shooting

Many people across the province woke up to alerts Friday. RCMP issued a dangerous person alert following a shooting incident in the community of Langham just 30 minutes North-West of Saskatoon. Kayla Guerrette has the latest from the community. – Jul 8, 2022

Two people are confirmed to be dead after RCMP responded to a shooting in Langham, Sask.

Saskatchewan RCMP issued an emergency alert on Friday for a dangerous person after a shooting in Langham.

Langham is approximately 32 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

People in the area were asked to find shelter and lock their doors.

Around 9 a.m., police said one person was dead after RCMP responded to a shooting.

RCMP earlier identified the suspect as Justin Heimbecker.

Just after 11 a.m., Corman Park police posted on social media that the suspect had been located and there is no threat to the public.

RCMP announced at 12:15 p.m. on Friday that the alert was cancelled.

Police believe there is no further risk to public safety and the shelter in place has also been cancelled.

An updated release sent just after 1 p.m. said a man who RCMP believe to be Heimbecker was found dead by officers inside a home around 11:40 a.m.

Police say they cannot confirm at this time that Heimbecker is the deceased.

The home was on fire early in the day, RCMP say.

RCMP major crimes is in the early stages of its investigation and further details have not been provided as of publication.

“Everybody here is wondering what’s happening,” said Langham Coun. Carol Epp, in an interview with The Canadian Press.

She said residents in the area received an alert on their phones to shelter in place. Saskatchewan issued the emergency alert at 7:40 a.m.

“We haven’t left the house. We see flashing lights and police cars going back and forth,” she said. “I just hope everyone is OK.”

Ted Slawinski, a business owner in Langham, said before he was leaving town, he didn’t even know about the shooting.

“The area of town where I was working earlier this morning was pretty calm,” he said in an interview with Global News. “But once I made my way out of town is when things got a little eerie. I was stopped by police and they asked to search my vehicle.”

In a news release, RCMP said the shooting happened in the community early Friday morning.
