CALGARY- Home sales have seen a huge spike in Calgary’s bedroom communities, helping Airdrie, Cochrane and Okotoks record their highest third-quarter sales ever.

Sales in the town totaled 1,288 units, which is 22 per cent higher than 2012 numbers. Experts say it’s partly due to tight market rental conditions and a declining supply of affordable homes in Calgary.

“Affordability and lifestyle preference play a significant role for consumers considering surrounding communities,” says CREB president Becky Walters. “These areas tend to provide single-family homes that offer more features at a lower cost than what can be found in the city.”

The June flood also sparked demand, even taking into consideration weaker activity in High River.

As of September, a single family home in towns surrounding Calgary cost an average of $351,400, compared with $463,700 in Calgary.
