CONSTRUCTION AND UPGRADES OF PARKS AND OPEN SPACE IN 2010
Landscape construction is scheduled or continuing on a number of projects this year, including several new parks and upgrades. It is anticipated that 2010 will be a very busy year for park construction with activity in every corner of the city. Major projects include:
New Parks:
Peter Zakreski Park (Stonebridge): Located directly east of Stonegate Shopping Centre, this district park will include baseball fields, a parking lot, pathways, benches, trees, shrubs, and turf.
South East Park Phase 2: Located north of the extension of Taylor Street (north of the Rosewood area), this district park will include a ball and multi-purpose field, parking lot, crusher dust paths, naturalized plantings, and tall grass areas.
Rouillard Park, Varley Park and Dry Pond (South Willowgrove): Two linear storm-water parcels and a dry pond area will be developed to park standards, including paths, benches, planting, and turf.
Elaine Hnatyshyn Park (Evergreen): This linear/pocket park will include lit paths, benches, picnic table, planting, play area, and irrigated turf. This park will proceed in fall 2010.
Kate Waygood Park (Meadowgreen): This new district park south of Appleby Drive will include new baseball and multi-purpose fields. Construction will begin in 2010 with phased in completion planned over subsequent years.
Upgrades and Sports-field Improvements:
W.J.L. Harvey Park North (Silverwood Heights): This core neighbourhood park will be upgraded with improved drainage, lit paths, play structure, plantings, irrigation, and new sportsfields.
Nutana Neighbourhood Park Development: Victoria School site will have improvements initiated including a lit path, benches, picnic area, plantings, and upgraded turf.
Victoria Park and the Gardener’s Site: Specific upgrades including new lit pathways, entry signage, electrical and water service for a proposed festival site, and improvements at the Gardener’s site (further upgrades are planned in 2011 and 2012).
Grace Adam Metawewinihk Park (Phase I): In conjunction with the Pleasant Hill Village redevelopment and new St. Mary’s School, this park is being re-configured, expanded, and upgraded to include new play equipment, lit paths, irrigation, plantings, and turf. Phase II is planned to proceed in 2012.
Seeded areas are best not used until the grass has been established (approximately one growing season after construction). The public is asked to cooperate by not walking on or otherwise using germinating grass areas.
The public is advised to please stay away from these sites during construction as there will be ongoing construction activity, excavations, uneven ground, and crews/equipment working.
