9-year-old boy injured, possibly by stray ammunition from air gun

CALGARY – Police are looking to the public for information after a child was injured, potentially by stray ammunition from an air gun on Saturday night.

It happened in the 3000 block of Dover Crescent around 8 p.m.

The nine-year-old was playing in his backyard of his Dover home when he heard a loud bang and rushed inside to his parents.

They took off the boy’s shirt and discovered a small wound on his upper abdomen. It turns out that the projectile went through his lungs and lodged into his liver.

The injured child was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Although he has since been released, officials say they were unable to remove the projectile as the procedure would be too intrusive.

Police conducted door-to-door interviews in the area, but haven’t yet been able to determine what injured the child. However, they say his wound is consistent with being hit with an object from an air-powered gun.

Just last month, the police urged Calgarians to be cautious with BB, pellet or air-powered guns as stray ammunition can cause real harm or damage to people, pets or property.

In Calgary it is a bylaw offence to fire any weapon within city limits, including on your own property

It is also against city bylaws to transport an air-powered gun with a round of ammunition in the chamber.
