MOOSE JAW – It might have a small town feel but Moose Jaw is dealing with big city issues and now the residents are having their say.

The citizen survey was presented to city council earlier this week and the biggest issue is the streets and roads with more than 60% citing it as their top concern.

“I don’t think that was a surprise,” said Moose Jaw mayor Deb Higgins, adding that infrastructure issues will be a top priority in the city’s upcoming budget.

Another top issue was fire protection, which comes following several major fires in recent years.

Moose Jaw’s fire chief says public education may spark improvements on that front.

“The responsibility is shared (with residents),” said Rod Montgomery.

The report also suggests that residents don’t feel they are getting value for their taxes and half say housing is difficult to come by.

Even with the complaints, the positives show too.

“Our recreation opportunities rated pretty high, which is overall good news,” Higgins said.

The survey was conducted over the summer.
