Multi-unit recycling program requires more public input

Multi-unit residential recycling program needs more public feedback before launching in Saskatoon. City of Saskatoon / Supplied

SASKATOON – Steps to launch a multi-unit recycling program in Saskatoon are moving along and the city wants more feedback.

The multi-unit residential recycling program would be mandatory for condominiums, apartments, townhouses and other residential dwellings not receiving individual garbage/recycling service from the city.

It was already decided that Cosmopolitan Industries will provide the service.

The program will accept the same items as the curbside recycling all in the same bin and will accept glass.

The city will pay Cosmo the same “per-door” fee that it pays Loraas for single family home recycling.

Residents’ fees still have not been determined, but the city says it may be the same as the single family, which is $4.66 a month.

City council requested an independent third-party review to validate the terms of the contract and proposed pricing. The results will be presented to council along with the results from an upcoming public consultation.

Residents are encouraged to provide their opinion on the program which was updated following consultations held this past March.

Civic staff and representatives from Cosmo will be available to share information, answer questions and collect comments at two upcoming sessions.

Information sessions will be held Thursday at Wildwood School between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and next Tuesday at Pleasant Hill School at the same time. Online information and surveys are available until Oct.18.

Following stakeholder consultations, Cosmo will finalize their proposal and cost before it goes before council.

The program is expected to start mid 2014.

Recycling from the multi-unit residential sector is expected to save two years on the landfill’s lifespan.
