RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Closing arguments have begun in the California trial of a former Guatemalan soldier charged with lying on his U.S. citizenship application about his alleged role in an army-led massacre three decades ago.
Lawyers on Monday are wrapping up the case brought against Jorge Sosa on charges of making false statements and obtaining American citizenship unlawfully.

Prosecutors say Sosa failed to disclose his military service and role in the massacre of at least 160 people in the village of Dos Erres during the height of Guatemala’s civil war in 1982.
Sosa’s attorney says his client told authorities about his army service when he unsuccessfully sought asylum in 1985. He later married a citizen and naturalized.
