Mother of ‘Surrey Six’ murder victim says she will be in court every day of the trial

Elieen Mohan lost her only son, Chris, in what has become known as the ‘Surrey Six’ murders almost six years ago.

Chris, 22, was one of two innocent victims caught up in the cross fire of a gang turf war. He, along with 55-year-old Ed Schellenberg, was found dead alongside four gang members inside an apartment on the 15th floor of the Balmoral Tower on Oct. 19, 2007.

Chris was a student at the time of his death.

His mother says she will be in court every day of the trial, no matter how painful it will be.

“When you lose your only son so innocently the way he was taken, I think anybody would want to be there for their child, and for me, Christopher was my only son so I need to be there, I need to know what happened,” she says, “and yes it’s going to be very emotional, very tough.”

“Especially for the first week, because they will be showing pictures, and the details, but as a person you need to represent your child and as a mother, Christopher and I had a very very close relationship and I need to be there and represent his rights.”

Eileen still lives in the same apartment building where her son was killed. She said it isn’t a comfort thing, but she isn’t going to run like a coward. “You stole my son’s life, but you’re not going to steal my life,” she tells the Global BC Morning News via phone.

“It’s been a long time coming,” she adds. “I've been waiting for this day for the last five years and 11 months so I’m going to let the justice process begin from today onwards.”

“I’m hoping to see justice at the end of the tunnel.”

Chris and Ed were found dead alongside Edward Narong, 22, Corey Lal, 21, his brother Michael Lal, 26, and Ryan Bartolomeo, 19. All men were known to police.
