BEDFORD, N.S. – No charges will be laid after a boating accident in the Bedford Basin early Monday morning. The boat, which was carrying five people, hit a large naval buoy around midnight.
Two men were thrown from the fibreglass boat and attempted to swim to shore. Rescue crews gave the pair life jackets to help them swim the few hundred metres to safety. When they came ashore off the Bedford Highway, the men were treated by paramedics. One had facial injuries, including a split tongue, and the other complained of back pain.

Two women and one man remained on the boat and were rescued by a team from Halifax Fire and the Coast Guard.
All the boaters were taken to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre for treatment. One of the women has since been released. The other four are being kept for observation and treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Police will not say if alcohol was a factor in the crash. The boat is now moored near the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.
